Book Fairs - Every Fall and Spring the
library becomes a giant bookstore with the latest selections from Scholastic
Books for parents and students to purchase. This is a welcome opportunity
for students and parents who seldom visit the mainland.
Annual
Author's Visit -
A well-known, published author spends a day with the students. Meeting
a real author encourages students to read and also gives them an opportunity
to learn how books are written and published.
Channel Crossings
This club, co-sponsored by the librarian, provides high school students
with opportunities for personal growth and
fosters intellectual, cultural, and artistic tolerance through trips
to mainland cultural activities and a camp designed to
broaden their cultural horizons.
Canine Literacy - Trained therapy dogs help
struggling readers develop self-esteem and skill by listening
attentively and appreciatively as students read to them in a non-threatening
environment.. The students reap multiple benefits – the
encouragement of a non-judgmental canine listener, one-on-one
reading practice, and the self-esteem boost from having been selected
for this novel activity.

Guest Speakers
Students hear about history or science first-hand; last year
from a holocaust survivor, a veterinarian working with the
Island fox, and a biologist working with bald eagles.
